Mark Mahaney is a photographer based in New York, originating from outside Chicago.
Throughout his career, Mark has crafted a unique perspective as a photographer with an archive that is as cohesive as it is varied. His work blurs the lines of editorial, art, and commercial through a mix of portraits and still lives, landscapes and interiors, color and black and white, though the look and feel are distinctly his own. Mark says, “I love when all of these different genres and approaches can successfully exist within a single body of work and look as if they were done by the same hand.”
Of all the qualities present in Mark’s work, the sense of timelessness is what he values above all. “I’m drawn to work that doesn’t follow trends and can’t be pinned down to a time or place.” Mark’s goal is always to create work that transcends the moment. “I tend to look back in order to look forward.”
Creating personal work continues to be crucial for Mark in maintaining a well-rounded practice. He is represented by Kominek Gallery and has exhibited internationally in Berlin, Paris, and Tokyo. His first monograph, Polar Night, was published in 2020 with Trespasser. The project – shot in Utqiagvik, Alaska, the northernmost point in the United States, where for 65 days of the year the sun does not rise – has been profiled in the British Journal of Photography, M Le Monde and The New Yorker.
