Jack Bool is a photographer based in Los Angeles.
Originally from the Bay Area, Jack studied photography at the California College of the Arts under professors Aspen Mays and Sam Contis. During his time at CCA, an interest in photobooks eventually led him to work with artist and publisher, Paul Schiek of TBW Books; a mentorship that lasted some years and ultimately introduced him to the wider photography and book communities.
Alongside his work and travels with TBW, Jack continued to develop his own practice not only through making photographs, but also by publishing zines and collaborating on DIY shows with friends — ways of working he continues to hold close, most recently publishing Randy (2024) with Friend Editions and Assembly (2024) with Same Paper, as well as curating CITRUS (2023), a joint exhibition in collaboration with photographer Cole Barash.
“I am interested in the poetic and literary qualities of photography and photo books. The way that a sequence of photographs can illustrate and complicate a narrative. There is a rich ambiguity and lyrical quality to pictures and photo books that keeps me engaged.”
At the root of Jack’s work is storytelling, a desire to tell stories about people and places, such as the surfing community in New Smyrna and the boys of Waimea Bay. This approach to image making has resulted in notable commissions for clients such as Air Jordan, Stüssy and Rapha.
